Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) indicates average blood pressure in an individual during a single cardiac cycle.
Why MAP matters
MAP is considered a better indicator of perfusion to vital organs than systolic blood pressure alone. At normal resting heart rates, diastole lasts twice as long as systole, which is why diastolic pressure counts twice as much in the calculation.
Targets
- Normal: 70-100 mmHg
- Target in Sepsis/Shock: ≥ 65 mmHg to ensure adequate organ perfusion.
- Hypertensive Emergency: Goal is typically a reduction of MAP by 20-25% in the first hour.
